| The Chuncheon
Community Health Research Center (CCHRC)
has been engaged in community health research and
service projects in the rural area of Chuncheon,
Kangwon Province, since May 1972. While providing
furnishing
its services, the Institute offers training opportunities
to students and researchers who need additional
experience in community health programs. The CCHRC
provides experience in conducting public health
research and preventive health services in order
to identify and solve the problems related to the
health status of the community; educating people
in the community about good health practices; and
developing a model for community health services
applicable to both urban and rural areas in Korea.
Since 1970, over 2,000 students in the master¡¯s
program have enrolled in the course ¡°Community
Health Field Training¡± at the CCHRC, resulting
in the publication of biennial reports and over
200 papers.
To promote voluntary participation of the community
in the Center¡¯s programs, public health research
and projects are carried out in cooperation with
government authorities. Research and projects
provided by the center cover areas including maternal
and child health services, family planning, environmental
health services, health education and dental hygiene.
In June 1974, an experimental community health
insurance plan was initiated in Shindong Myun and
was fully adopted by the city of Chuncheon in 1977. The plan
was successfully operated and, with the voluntary
participation of over 40,000 people, it became the
model for the national health insurance program
until its merging into the national program in
1990.The clinic at the Center provides primary
medical care to an average of 80 community people
a day.
Professors of the GSPH have been involved in
the Center¡¯s research and projects,
and based on the evaluation of research results,
they have offered information for national health
care policies
and programs. Ongoing CCHRC research and services
concern: industrial health, custodial care in
institutions, training for students and men/women
in public health, community education on health
topics, mental health and elderly care, such
as eye care, and disease dentification and control,
i.e. hypertension.
